Is there anything more magical than a snowflake? We don’t think so and this origami version is a true classic.
Have a go at this super simple, eco friendly, craft activity which makes for a stunningly effective decorative centrepiece. Little crafters will love to get stuck in too.
Create them in various sizes then hang them in the windows, tied with coloured ribbon or as ornaments on your tree. They will give your home a wonderful Nordic inspired look, full of traditional festive charm.
Top tip: Why not use them as gift tags or stick onto homemade Christmas cards to give them a clever 3D effect that really pops.
You will need:
- White or brown paper - use recyclable materials or recycled paper such as used wrapping paper.
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Ribbon
Let’s get started:
Start with a square sheet of paper (not rectangular).
Time to fold.
Step 1
Fold the piece of paper in half to make a triangle, as shown.
Step 2
Fold the triangle in half to create a smaller triangle, ensuring that the corners meet, like so.
Step 3
Now divide the triangle into 3 sections, using a ruler for accuracy.
Step 4
Fold the left section inwards and then do the same with the right, so that they meet in the middle.
Step 5
Turn it over and cut along the horizontal edge, snipping off the bottom. Then fold it in half one more time. You will be left with a triangle like this…
Step 6
Use your creative flair to cut our random shapes along each side like so,
There’s no right or wrong way to do this. Go straight, curvy - anything goes here. Each snowflake will have its own unique pattern, just like in nature! Remember to supervise any young ones around scissors and use child friendly ones if you have them.
Step 7
Carefully unfold your piece of paper to reveal your very own design.
Now you can go for it and create as many as you like until you have your very own little flurry of snowflakes!
Step 8
Take a piece of ribbon or string and thread it through one of the existing holes. Tie a knot in the end to secure it and hang to your heart's content.
Experiment with various shapes and sizes for a show stopping winter wonderland scene.
